But out of that suffering, something unexpected has emerged: Puerto Rico is now a global model for what sustainable, resilient infrastructure can look like. And the companies doing the work there are writing a playbook that the rest of the world needs to pay attention to.
That's the perspective Ignacio Diaz of Glenn International brought to the Driving Mobility podcast in a conversation with host Kristin Slanina, ParkMyFleet's CIO. Glenn International is the leading supplier of renewable energy, electrical, lighting, and telecom equipment for the Caribbean, and it sits at the center of Puerto Rico's rebuilding effort.

When Maria struck, the result was the largest blackout in American history. Nearly the entire island lost power, and in many communities, power was not restored for months. In some areas, the outage lasted close to a year.
The human cost was devastating. People on home medical equipment died. Businesses shuttered. Families left the island, some never to return. The economic damage was incalculable.
What Maria exposed was not just the damage of a single storm, but the accumulated failure of decades of underinvestment in resilient infrastructure.
The Rebuild as a Reimagination
The rebuilding of Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure hasn't just been about replacing what was lost. It's been an opportunity to build something fundamentally different.
Solar power has been central to that reimagination. The island's geography and climate make it exceptionally well-suited for solar generation, and the combination of dropping solar costs and federal recovery funding has enabled a meaningful expansion of distributed solar capacity.
Distributed generation matters specifically because of what it does to resilience. A centralized grid fails catastrophically when a hurricane knocks out a transmission line. A distributed grid, with generation spread across rooftops and local facilities, is far harder to take down in its entirety. Communities with local solar generation can maintain some power even when the central grid fails.
Battery storage is the paired technology that makes distributed solar truly resilient, providing power through the night and during cloudy conditions. The buildout of solar-plus-storage systems across Puerto Rico is shifting the island toward a grid architecture that is inherently more resistant to the kind of catastrophic failure that Maria caused.
Glenn International's Role
Glenn International's work encompasses the full range of equipment needed to build out this new grid: solar panels, inverters, battery systems, grid interconnection equipment, lighting, and telecommunications infrastructure.
Telecom is worth noting specifically. Power and communications are linked: when the grid goes down, so does most connectivity. Rebuilding telecom infrastructure alongside power infrastructure ensures that communities can communicate and coordinate during and after disasters.
Diaz's perspective, shaped by years of working in the Caribbean market, is that Puerto Rico's reconstruction has forced a level of innovation and urgency that more stable markets often lack. When the old way clearly didn't work, the motivation to try something fundamentally different is much stronger.
What the Rest of the World Can Learn
Puerto Rico's experience is a preview of what more communities around the world will face as climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
The lesson is not that catastrophe is inevitable. It is that the infrastructure built for the climate of the 20th century is not adequate for the climate of the 21st. Communities that wait for the next disaster to force a reckoning will pay a much higher price than those that act now.
The shift toward distributed renewable generation, battery storage, and resilient telecom infrastructure is not just a climate strategy. It is a resilience strategy. The two goals are inseparable.
Puerto Rico, which had no choice but to confront this reality head-on, is now demonstrating what a rebuilt, resilient energy system can look like in practice. That's a model worth studying.
